MUNI PhD Day 2024
Embarking on a PhD is an exhilarating adventure, but it can also be a complex one. To help new candidates at Masaryk University navigate this challenging path, the university organized its first-ever MUNI PhD Day, a comprehensive event designed to transform potential stress into confident excitement.
The day began with a strong message from Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Studies, Šárka Pospíšilová, who emphasized the vital role of PhD candidates in the university's scientific success. She was joined by Vice-dean Luděk Bláha, who spoke about MUNI's commitment to improving PhD training to help students achieve international quality. The first half of the event was a practical guide for newcomers, offering essential tips from experienced colleagues and the MUNI PhD Centre. Markéta Burešová shared key information on research workflows, working effectively with supervisors, and exploring opportunities like stays abroad.
A lively coffee break followed, where participants had the chance to connect with various university departments crucial to student success. Representatives from the Competence Development Centre, Career Centre, and Language Centre were on hand to offer their support, giving students a clear picture of the resources available to them.
The second half of the day shifted focus to career development and essential research skills. Ivana Jašková, also from the MUNI PhD Centre, introduced frameworks like ResearchComp and Eurodoc, which are used to build the MUNI PhD Academia. This program is specifically designed to equip PhD candidates with the skills needed for both academic careers and roles in the wider job market. Attendees were also given a preview of upcoming events, including the MUNI PhD Career Days 2024 and a future PhD Retreat focused on mental health.
The event concluded on a supportive note, with a focus on work-life balance and mental well-being. Ms. Burešová provided recommendations for apps, organizations, and spaces available to students who might be struggling. The day ended with a visit to the Trýba room, a dedicated space where PhD students can write, discuss their research, and build a sense of community. This "MUNI PhD HUB" stands as a symbol of the university's commitment to ensuring its newest researchers feel supported and empowered throughout their journey.
